Successful start in Portimao for Laverty

11Yamaha World Superbike Team riders Eugene Laverty wrapped up the first World Superbike test of the 2011 season. Run over three days at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, Laverty experienced mixed and challenging weather conditions as the team and Laverty put their 2011 YZF-R1 race bike through its paces.

Very limited dry track time made it impossible for the team to simulate any race distance runs to find a perfect set up for the Portimao circuit however they were able to successfully test and evaluate the updates and developments of the 2011 R1 and came away from the test confirming there were no issues and achieving positive results.

Successful evaluations included confirming the different weight distribution of the bike, updated electronics and performance running with the new 2011 FIM regulations that include standard fuel injectors, standard fuel regulator and standard fuel pump. The 2011 bike also features a small increase in horsepower.

Laverty continued to impress, the young rider continuing to adapt quickly to Superbike riding. He tested a few things with the team over the three days, again being unable to run race distance due to weather the time was spent focusing on development work. The final combined times saw him in third position just two tenths off the number one spot.

“Despite the weather it has been really beneficial for me to get some more laps on the bike. I hadn’t had any time on the R1 in the wet before this test so if race one at Phillip Island is wet now it’ll be fine! I’m really happy with the bike, in the wet and the dry. It was a slow start on the first day but then we made a big breakthrough with the front setting and I jumped up to third which is at least where I should be. It shows we can be strong so I’m confident we can be on the pace wherever we go. When I walk into the garage I feel at home. We came here and picked up where we left off from last year’s Phillip Island test really smoothly. I’m looking forward to getting back to Australia now for the two day test and then getting stuck into some racing!”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager
“This test was very important as we had full spec of the 2011 race bike so we had to verify that everything was right. Eugene was also improving consistently. He worked hard on the set up on the Wednesday, the results were confirmed later in the afternoon with some fast laps. Unfortunately the weather did not help. I think for the future we should look elsewhere for less unpredictable weather. We leave Portimao with a good feeling and a competitive package. We have another two days of testing to work on the set up for the first Philip island race.“

The first Superbike race kicks off at Philip Island, Australia on 27th February.

LAVERTY HEADS TO OFFICIAL WSB TEST IN PORTIMAO

yt10_laverty_06IRELAND’S Eugene Laverty is looking forward to getting back out on his factory Yamaha World Superbike this week as he heads out to the official IMS test at Portimao, Portugal.
With just a month to go until the 2011 season gets underway at Phillip Island, Australia, on February 27, Laverty will join the championship’s other main protagonists for the three-day official test at the Portuguese track this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, January 26-28.
This week’s test will follow a successful last outing for the Irishman, who left Phillip Island fastest overall after a three-day test early in December. And now he can’t wait to get back onboard his factory Yamaha YZF-R1 machine.
“I’m looking forward to it because it a good bit of track time for me and the team,” he revealed. “I’m excited about getting back on the bike, it’s been about six or seven weeks since the Australia test and I’m itching to get out there again.
“One of the big things for me is to have another three days on the superbike because my brain still thinks it’s in 600cc mode sometimes. At the moment I still have to remind myself every time I hop on the bike that it’s going to be faster, and I know after a few days the 600 mentality will have all but vanished.”
Laverty will use the test to get fully up to speed with his 2011 bike ahead of his rookie season in the world’s leading Superbike championship, as well as pit himself against his rivals. These are set to include 2010 champion Max Biaggi and his Alitalia Aprilia team-mate Leon Camier, the Castrol Hondas of Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus, Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes and Joan Lascorz amongst others.
“We have a few little things to work on with the bike and electronics, but I think it’s mainly about just getting on there, riding it and getting up to speed as quickly as I can.
“I left the last test fastest after the three days and of course I would love to be in a similar position on Friday but being the fastest man doesn’t worry me particularly at this point. You can’t think about who will ultimately be quickest because you don’t know what they’re doing or running.
“What I do want is to be consistently up there in the top five at the end of every day. Being at the sharp end over the full three days is what I’m looking for.
“I’m pleased to see there are a lot of riders heading out there because you can really get a good idea of what they’re doing and where everyone else is at. It’s going to be a very useful test and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Having recently enjoyed a break in Florida, Laverty has had a chance to relax and unwind ahead of his debut superbike season. “I’ve had a really nice winter break which I always think is important,” he said.
“The off-season is very short in this championship and if you don’t make the most of it you can find one season runs straight into the next. This year I feel like I’ve had a bit of a break and it means I come back refreshed and raring to go. I can’t wait.”
The 2011 World Superbike Championship roars into action over the weekend February 25-27 at Phillip Island, Australia. Laverty and the other teams will enjoy a final official test when they arrive at the track on February 21 and 22.
