Laverty confirmed as Biaggi’s team-mate

200Aprilia has confirmed the status of new signing Eugene Laverty for the 2012 World Superbike Championship season.

The 25-year-old Irishman, who finished fourth in his debut WSBK campaign with Yamaha, has now been confirmed as Max Biaggi’s team-mate at the factory Aprilia Racing team.

Double 2011 race winner Laverty was fastest on his RSV4 debut at the recent Portimao test.

Portimao test times: Laverty stuns in first Aprilia outing

200 By Michael Guy, www.motorcyclenews.com
Eugene Laverty fired a warning shot to his 2012 WSB rivals in Portugal today by setting the fastest lap time first time out onboard his factory PATA Aprilia.

The 25 year old Irishman set an impressive 1.42.8s best at the end of the test to top the time sheets and show beyond doubt that he will be a serious title contender in 2012.

After a steady start Laverty made a number of changes to the set-up of his Aprilia to improve the feel, grip and bump absorption and was then able to show what he was capable of using the same race tyre as he used on Sunday.

Speaking to MCN, he said: “I’m happy and to be honest a little bit surprised to be fastest and to do a 1.42.8 lap time. I’d heard a lot about this bike over the years but in my opinion things have been exaggerated. The engineers I’m working with know the bike really well, which helped me a lot and it’s also been a big advantage having spent three days racing here at the weekend.”

Jonathan Rea led proceedings for the majority of the day having set an impressive 1.43.0 time in the morning. The Castrol Honda rider had a host of hard parts to evaluate and to maximise track time, Rea had four bikes available to test:

He said: “It’s been a busy one, we’ve got a lot done and found a direction we need to work in. We saw it in the race on Sunday that I’m down on speed but the team, have got some good ideas of how we can improve that so I’m feeling confident. It was nice to finish the season with two podiums and it’s good to be fast here at the test.”

Kawasaki man Joan Lascorz built on his impressive race weekend to set the joing second fastest time ahead of BMW man Leon Haslam.

Haslam got to evaluate a new 2012 spec BMW S1000RR complete with revised chassis, engine and bodywork.

He said: “I wenet faster today on the new bike than I did all weekend so it’s positive.I could feel the difference but it’s still really early days in terms of the set-up so its still not perfect. I think if we’d spent the day on the old bike we would have been even faster, but it’s good to make a start with the new one.”

Haslam’s team-mate Marco Melandri made a promising start to his life at BMW with a 1.43.7s best. The 28 year old Italian was pleasantly surprised by the feeling from the bike, but admitted to MCN that there is still a lot of work to do.

For full insight into the test see MCN out Wednesday 26th October.

Spectacular One Two for the Yamaha WSB Team at the Season Finale in Portimao

p20111016183042835Yamaha World Superbike riders completed yet another spectacular race day today in Portimao, the final two races of the 2011 WSB season, with an outstanding one two finish on the Portuguese podium. Both Melandri and Laverty completed their WSB rookie seasons in style, closing the championship with Marco Melandri in second place in the 2011 WSB Championship standings and Eugene Laverty in fourth, the latter tying on points with 2010 Champion - Max Biaggi who takes the third place.

The Yamaha World Superbike Team proved to be the top team in the standings by completing the second race of the day with a spectacular one two race finish. Skillful race craft and determination was on display throughout the 22 laps. Laverty claimed the lead on lap one, following a perfect start off the front row on the grid, while Melandri tucked in behind him in second place by lap three. Holding off advances from Rea and Checa, Melandri closely tailed him team-mate to eventually take the lead with just four laps to go and snatch the chequered flag, claiming his fourth victory of the year. His Northern Irish team-mate and fellow rookie crossed the line just one second behind, to take the second step on the last podium of the season.

Both Yamaha riders faced a difficult race one after getting off to a perfect start from the grid. After just two laps Eugene Laverty had an issue with the rear of the machine, skillfully managed to avoid crashing but was forced to come in and have the steering damper repaired. The determined Northern Irish rider went back out, with a two lap gap and impressively made up four places setting fast lap times to complete the race in 19th position but missed out on important points for third place in the championship. Team-mate Marco Melandri struggled with rear tyre issues but pushed hard to cross the line in sixth place.
In this stellar season the Yamaha World Superbike team has claimed an amazing 19 podiums of which six race victories with two WSB rookie riders, Yamaha taking the second place in the 2011 World Superbike Manufacturer’s standings with a total of 450 points and the top team in the Team standings
Earlier this season, Yamaha Motor Europe took the difficult decision to withdraw the official Yamaha World Superbike Team from the FIM Superbike World Championship at the end of the 2011 season, so today’s race day in Portimao sadly marked the final race for the Yamaha WSB team.

Eugene Laverty
Yamaha World Superbike Team - 19th, 2nd
“Well it was a great end to the season for Yamaha with a one two race finish in race two. It’s been a fantastic year and I’d like to thank Yamaha and all the team for that. Obviously it would have been great to finish up with one more point to get third in the championship, but unfortunately I lost out on a lot of points in race one. I had an issue with the bike on lap three, coming into the VIP tower corner when the rear of the machine came off the ground and the bike suddenly snapped sideways. I was lucky not have crashed and managed to stay on the bike but the viciousness of the incident broke the steering damper and I had to come back in and have it changed. It’s a pity as the pace was quick and I could have definitely been on the podium.”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager

“Fantastic! A great finish to an amazing season. Marco and Eugene were really spectacular. In the second race they showed fantastic racing, proving to be very talented and determined riders with great respect for each other. It’s a pity Eugene lost out on important points in the first race and Marco had a problem with the rear tyre and they couldn’t fight for the podium.

I’d like to thank the riders, the team and all our partners for the professionalism, passion and motivation evident throughout the 13 races of the season. Second place in the Manufacturer’s championship is an excellent result for Yamaha, considering that both riders are rookies and were battling with Checa, a Champion that deserves his title, flawless all year and making the most of the advantage that the twin cylinder machines are provided by the championship. We are proud that our R1 is the first four cylinder in the standings. Thanks to everyone.”

Yamaha WSB Team secure front row starts ahead of the grand finale in Portimao

11Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri were on flying form today on the sunny Algarve circuit at Portimao to secure two front row starts on tomorrow’s grid for the final two races of the 2011 season.
Both riders got straight down to business in this morning’s second qualifying session making several minor adjustments to their R1 set-ups in search of better grip and stability on the machine. Having made significant improvements, both riders concentrated on race set up in the afternoon’s free practice, completing a longer run before wrapping up the successful session at the top of the time sheets, with Melandri in first place and his team-mate just 0.031 of a second behind him in second position.

In the first Superpole knockout session this afternoon, Melandri set the fastest time to claim the top slot, while his team-mate, just behind in third place went comfortably through to the second heat of the day, having both saved their qualifiers for the remaining two sessions. Laverty dominated the second heat using a qualifier to clock in an impressive 1’42.097, just 0.005 off the best lap time recorded on the R1 in 2010. While several riders switched to the last qualifying tyre to complete a further two laps and secure a place in the third heat, Melandri was bumped to eighth place. The final Superpole session of the season saw both Yamaha riders claim front row positions on tomorrow’s race grid, with Laverty in third place and his Italian team-mate beside him in fourth, setting them up nicely for the grand finale.

Eugene Laverty
“It was a pretty good day overall. Another front row start is important, I was hoping to get pole but Johnny (Rea) was very strong and third on the grid is pretty good. This morning we tried a few things that didn’t quite work out but in the final free practice session we made a big step in the right direction, getting some more rear grip on the bike, which is really important ahead of tomorrow’s race day. We have some more work to do in the morning but we are almost there and I am confident enough that I can be fighting for a podium in the last two races of the season.”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager
“We were aiming for a front row start for the last races of the season, so that mission was accomplished today with both riders, confirming our strong total team performance. Eugene has been fast all weekend and yet again in today’s Superpole, which is very important as tomorrow he will be doing his best to hold on to the third place in the championship. He and his team worked hard to improve consistency on the race tyres and rear grip, areas where he was struggling a little yesterday. Marco gradually improved the set up on his machine throughout the day, gaining the confidence he requires to be 100% competitive tomorrow. He put in some fast laps with the race tyres but was unable to improve much on the qualifier. Most important is that both riders will be starting from the front row and fighting to take home two more race wins before ending the season.”

Laverty makes an impressive start to the season’s grand finale in Portimao

p20111014181304897Yamaha World Superbike riders successfully completed today’s opener to the season showdown which took place in scorching sunshine at the Portuguese track of Portimao, on the infamous Algarve. Yamaha riders Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri, intent on concluding the 2011 season in the best possible manner, got straight down to business to wind up the day in second and eighth places on the scoreboard.

Eugene Laverty, determined to keep a strong hold on his current third place in the championship standings, was quick off the mark as early as in the morning’s free practice session which he wrapped up in seventh position. After making some adjustments to the suspensions of his R1 machine prior to the afternoon’s first qualifying practice, the Northern Irish rider proceeded to lap the Portuguese track at a relatively fast pace, clocking in an impressive 1’43.666 towards the end to climb up to second, just 0.087 of a second behind World Champion, Checa and on a provisional front row on Sunday’s race grid.

Team-mate and fellow World Superbike rookie Melandri, worked hard today to get re-familiarized with the circuit which he first experienced just one month after his shoulder surgery, last January. The Italian spent the morning confronting different set-ups on the two R1s in search of suitable direction to work in. Despite the significant lack of rear grip, Melandri managed to make progress throughout the afternoon’s first qualifying session to end up in eighth place. Both Yamaha riders will continue to make adjustments and fine tune their machinery in tomorrow’s practice session ahead of the grand finale races on Sunday.

Eugene Laverty
Yamaha World Superbike Team - 2nd, 1′43.666
“It was a pretty good day today, similar to the first qualifying session in Magny Cours. I’ve tested the Superbike here already so I feel comfortable on it and it’s nice to be up to speed from the very start of the weekend and not have to be catching up gradually. The R1 is working well, we got good speed in but the lap times are dropping after just a few laps so we need to work on consistency for tomorrow. Hopefully our lap times should be ok to get through to Superpole and we’ll see what other changes to make in the morning.”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager
“In general the day went quite well, having both riders provisionally in the front two rows. As we expected, Eugene was quick from the very first session, has a good pace with the race tyres and is just behind Checa using the softer tyres. He needs to work on the stability of his machine and improve in sectors where he is losing some time. We knew Marco had to use the first session to get familiar with the track and learn the lines but he made noticeable improvements by the afternoon’s session. He is fast with the soft tyres but the team need to work hard to improve the set-up to provide better rear grip on the race tyres and how the bike enters corners. We are confident that he will make further progress tomorrow and both riders can be at the front on Sunday.”

From Crash.net - Eugene Laverty: No contract signed yet

1Eugene Laverty is hopeful he will be riding for a new World Superbike Championship team come the post-season tests at Portimao next week, though he insists he has not put pen to paper with any potential employers.

Laverty has emerged as a hot topic ahead of the final round of the 2011 WSBK season, the Irishman linked with several manufacturers, including Aprilia, BMW Italia, Honda and Kawasaki.

However, though Laverty is heavily rumoured to have inked a deal with Aprilia, the man himself insists he has not committed his future just yet. Despite this, the Monza double winner will take delivery of ‘logo-less’ overalls this weekend in preparation for a potential outing with a new team.

“On Tuesday I may get the chance to throw my leg over my new steed for 2012 but before that I’ll be needing to sign a contract,” he wrote in his official blog.

“There’s a cool Alpinestars testing suit arriving on Monday without any team logos which is a really strange situation to be in.”

Laverty’s future plans have reportedly been confused by an unusually stagnant WSBK market. Indeed, at this stage, just BMW has firmed its full line-up for 2012, though Italian press has linked the manufacturer with a big-money swoop for new champion Carlos Checa following reports that Ducati have not issued him with a contract extension. Nonetheless, the Spaniard has signalled his intentions to stay at Althea Racing if possible.

JUST ONE TO GO

111008dr14401With one round of the season remaining I’ve moved up to 3rd in the championship just two points ahead of Max Biaggi. Unfortunately for Max he’s been out injured for a few rounds which has allowed me to reel him in. I expect him to make a return for the final round at Portimao this weekend in order to battle it out for the final spot on the championship rostrum. I’d be over the moon to finish top three in the championship with it being my rookie season but at the same time I won’t be too dejected if I lose out. The opportunity has been gifted to me as a result of Max’s injury so it’s up to me to prove my worth this weekend. On Tuesday I may get the chance to throw my leg over my new steed for 2012 but before that I’ll be needing to sign a contract. There’s a cool Alpinestars testing suit arriving on Monday without any team logos which is a really strange situation to be in! My focus right now though is on two solid podium finishes to round out the season in style. Of course I’d like to stand atop the rostrum again, however, Carlos Checa is proving a hard man to stop on the Ducati 1198! It’s been five months since Monza but it feels more like ten.

Magny Cours was a strong weekend for us. In race one I had big problems with the front right from the off. Even though it was folding I could still turn the bike with the full fuel load and the grip from the rear which allowed me to open up a substantial lead on the rest of the guys. By midway I was entering corners 15kph slower and doing my best to stay onboard. I had a few scary moments and by the time the group behind caught up I could do nothing as they blitzed under me on corner entry. It was unfortunate as all weekend our setting was working best in the cooler conditions of the early afternoon so we lost out on a realistic shot at victory. The temperature was up for race two and with it went our rear grip. I had no such problems with the front this time but I just didn’t have the rear traction to hang onto Carlos. My teammate Marco was really strong in the closing laps and he sneaked under me on the final lap. Nevertheless I achieved my fifth podium finish of the season so I was relatively content.

I attended the final round of the British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch last weekend and it was the best day of racing I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing trackside. My brother Michael rode brilliantly to win the first BSB race on Saturday afternoon then on Sunday the racing was just something else in both supersport and superbike. Alastair Seeley and Ben Wilson diced for the title on track as did Tommy Hill and Hopper. Hollywood’s finest couldn’t have written the script any better! Stuart Higgs runs a fantastic series and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves. After all he devised the new superpole format which both F1 and World Superbikes have since taken onboard. It was a superb end to the season and one that’ll be remembered for a long time.

There seems to be a ton of fans making the trip out to Portugal from both the UK and Ireland so you can be sure that I’ll be doing my best to give you all something to cheer for on Sunday afternoon. I’m looking forward to the battle with Max so let’s hope for some good close racing!

Wish me luck.

Yamaha WSB team get geared up for the grand finale in Portimao

p20111011145035433The Yamaha World Superbike Team sets out for the 13th and final round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship, this weekend at the Autodrome Algarve, Portimao. As the riders set up for the final two races of the season Marco Melandri is in second place in the overall standings, a significant 77 points ahead of team-mate and fellow WSB Rookie, Laverty in third place on 283 points. Just 2 points separating Laverty from 2010 WSB champion Max Biaggi, the Yamaha rider is heading to Portimao eager to keep a firm hold on his third place finish.

Both Yamaha riders will be looking to complete their rookie season for Yamaha in style and add to their numerous achievements this year. Melandri has pocketed a spectacular 14 Podiums and 3 race wins thus far while Laverty has reached a remarkable 5 podiums and 2 race wins, following the impressive double at the factory teams home track in Monza. The Northern Irish rider aims to get his hands on the Tissot Superpole, the last of the season up for grabs to add to his list of achievements.

This will be the second outing at Portimao this year for Yamaha World Superbike team, having tested at the Portuguese track at the beginning of the 2011 season. The new 4.658 km circuit, built is 2008, is often compared to classical layouts such as Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps due to its constantly undulating nature. Despite the lack of track time due to bad weather during the tests back in January, Melandri and Laverty got a chance to experience their powerful R1 on the downhill slopes, right hand turns, swooping corners and wide straights that the Portuguese circuit has to offer.

Eugene Laverty
Yamaha World Superbike Team
“It was nice to be back on the podium again in Magny Cours and I aim to continue that momentum in Portimao. It would be nice to end the season with a race win, it’s been quite a while since my victory in Monza. Max will probably be back and fighting for third place in the championship, but I’ll be giving it my best shot to stay where I am now and end the year third in the overall standings. I’m looking forward to the final battle.”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager
“This is the last race of the season and the last race for the Yamaha WSB team so we are more motivated than ever to ensure we leave an amazing memory of a winning team behind us. We intend keeping a firm hold on our second place in the Manufacturer’s standings and second (already confirmed) and third places in the rider’s standings, being the only two 4-cylinder machines in the top three. Marco became familiar with the track just one month after his shoulder surgery, he will make the most of Friday and Saturday to push hard and improve his set-up with the aim of two podium finishes on Sunday. I’m confident that Eugene will do a fantastic job on Sunday; he knows the circuit very well from his relationship with the venue in the past in World Supersport, was fast there in the tests in January and has a great team behind him.”

Spectacular Double Podium for Yamaha World Superbike Team at Penultimate Round of the Season

p20111002181908338The R1 has yet again delivered spectacular results on the French circuit at Magny Cours today, with riders Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty completing race one in second and fifth places respectively and the second race of the day with a fantastic double podium for Yamaha, taking second and third places.

Eugene Laverty was on equally flying form at the penultimate round of the season. The Northern Irish man dominated the first half of race one before Checa overtook to take the lead. Laverty pushed hard to hold second but began to struggle with severe tyre wear on the rear of his R1 and was forced to settle for fifth at the line. Yamaha World Superbike riders concluded a hotter second race with Melandri climbing up to the third before closing in on and overtaking his team-mate on the last lap to power his Yamaha to the line, close behind champion Checa and claim the second step on the podium, while Laverty closely followed in third.

Marco Melandri leaves Magny Cours in second place in the championship. Following Carlos Checa title win today and the 77 point gap between the Italian and his fellow Yamaha team-mate now in third place, Melandri; the World Superbike Rookie, has completed the outstanding year in second place in the overall Championship classification. Following today’s impressive race results Laverty has jumped up to third place in the championship standings. Just 2 points separates the Northern Irish rider from the reigning world champion Max Biaggi, who is expected to make a return to the track after his recent injury, for the final round of the season in Portimao. The World Superbike rookie will be heading to the grand finale determined to keep a firm hold on his top three finish. Yamaha is in second place in the Manufacturer’s Championship standings, a substantial 16 points ahead of third. Yamaha already secured the top place in the Team Standings in the last round in Imola, and cannot be surpassed by another team.

Eugene Laverty
Yamaha World Superbike Team - 5th, 3rd
“They were two very tough races today. I was fighting hard for a podium in race one but I was struggling quite a bit with the rear towards the end and it was either crash or settle for fifth and I chose the latter. In the second race the bike was feeling very strong. I tried to stay with Carlos and battle for a win but he’s hard to beat this year and then Marco did a great last few laps and managed to overtake me. It’s great to be back on the podium again and it’s nice to have two Yamahas up here together. I’m delighted to be in third place in the championship but hopefully Max will be back in Portimao so we can battle for third overall.”

Andrea Dosoli - Yamaha World Superbike Team Manager
“Today was a fantastic race day for both riders. Marco did really well to get two podiums on a track he didn’t know until this weekend, especially from 8th place off the grid. He has proved yet again to be a strong competitor and we are proud of his progress. Eugene also did a fantastic job in both races. It’s a pity he couldn’t get a podium finish in the first race due to harsh rear tyre wear, but considering the circumstances he did really well. In the second race he dominated the first part and then continued to battle with the champion to get a podium that has taken him into third place in the classification. Both sides of the garage worked really hard yet again this weekend and did a fantastic job. We are now second and third in the standings and the only four cylinder machines in the top three.”
